محطات الوقود

A fuel station’s hardest-working asset is not the pump — it is the shop door. Gas station analytics tells you how many of the drivers on your forecourt actually walk into the convenience store, the café or the car wash, and how that share moves by hour, by day and by site. V-Count sensors count shop entries, forecourt movement and in-store zones anonymously, then feed the numbers into BoostBI so you can line them up against pump transactions, till receipts and staff rosters.

The result is one comparable number for every station in the network — forecourt-to-shop conversion — plus the hourly detail you need to staff the commuter peak, time restroom cleaning and judge whether a coffee promotion earned its place.

Gas station analytics: what to measure on a forecourt

Fuel volume alone tells you almost nothing about the profitable half of a modern service station. The margin sits in the shop, the coffee machine, the food-to-go cabinet and the car wash, and every one of those depends on a driver deciding to leave the pump and walk inside. Gas station analytics starts by turning that decision into a measurable number, then breaks it down by hour, site and category so it can actually be managed.

  • Forecourt-to-shop conversion. Forecourt arrivals counted against shop entries. This is the single KPI that separates a station that sells fuel from one that sells a basket.
  • Shop entries by hour versus pump transactions. The two curves rarely match. Where entries lag transactions you have a shop that fuel customers are walking past; where entries run ahead you have destination trade — commuters, coffee, parcels — that deserves its own staffing plan.
  • Category capture. Separate counts for the café and food-to-go area, the car wash lane and the restroom corridor, so you know which secondary offer is actually pulling people in.
  • Peak profile. Commuter stations live and die on two narrow windows. Fifteen-minute counts show exactly when the morning and evening surges start and end.
  • Queue and dwell at the till and coffee counter. Time spent waiting is the most common reason a fuel customer abandons a basket at a forecourt shop.
  • Network benchmarking. Petrol station footfall normalised per site, per hour and per staff hour, so a busy motorway site and a quiet rural one can be compared fairly.
  • Promotion and loyalty attribution. Entries and conversion before, during and after a campaign, at the sites that ran it and the sites that did not.

Where the sensors go on a fuel station site

A service station is really three counting environments in one: a weather-exposed forecourt, a small bright shop and a handful of narrow interior zones. Each needs a different sensor, and a gas station visitor counter that works above a shop door will not survive under a canopy.

  • Shop entrance. Nano AI sits above the automatic door and counts entries and exits directionally, filtering out staff trips and people who stop in the doorway. This is the baseline for all people counting at the site.
  • Forecourt and canopy. Nano Outdoor is built for exactly this: rain, direct sun, night-time glare from pump lighting and a wide open area with no ceiling to mount against. It gives you the forecourt side of the conversion equation and can watch the car wash approach lane at the same time.
  • High or glazed shop interiors. Where ceilings are high, lighting is uneven or the shopfront is fully glass, Nano Prime 3D stereo counting holds up better than a single-lens device.
  • Interior zones. Small sensors over the café and food-to-go area, the chilled aisle and the till run split the shop into zones so you can see which part of the store a visit actually reached.
  • Restroom corridor. A counter on the corridor turns cleaning from a clock-based routine into a usage-based one — the same approach described on our restroom people counting page.
  • Real-time occupancy. VCare shows how many people are in the shop right now, which matters for small forecourt stores where six customers already feels full.
  • The dashboard. Everything lands in BoostBI, where each site gets its own hourly view and the network gets a league table, with alerts when a site drops below its own normal.

All counting is anonymous. The sensors process movement on the device and output counts, not identities — no faces are stored, no plates are read and no personal data leaves the site, which keeps a forecourt deployment straightforward under GDPR and similar regimes.

How gas station operators use the data

  • Staff the two peaks, not the average. A commuter site can do a third of its shop trade in ninety minutes. Hourly entry curves let you move a shift start by thirty minutes rather than adding headcount, and they justify a second person on the coffee counter only on the days that need one.
  • Fix the forecourt-to-shop gap. When a site fuels well but converts badly, the causes are usually physical: an obscured shop entrance, a pay-at-pump default that removes any reason to walk in, or a promotion that is invisible from the pump island. Zone counts show whether visitors who do come in ever reach the café or the chiller.
  • Protect the coffee and till experience. Pair entry counts with waiting time to set a trigger for opening the second till. Our queue management approach applies directly to forecourt shops, where the customer has a car outside and very little patience.
  • Trigger cleaning by usage. Restroom and shop counts since the last clean are a far better trigger than a fixed rota, and they give you an auditable record for brand standards and franchise inspections.
  • Attribute promotions and loyalty. Compare entries and conversion at participating sites against a control group for the same hours. That separates a genuine uplift from a busy week.
  • Benchmark and invest across the network. Gas station visitor analytics ranked per site exposes the stations where a refit, a longer opening window or a food-to-go franchise would pay back, and the ones where the traffic simply is not there.
  • Prove the car wash case. Counting the wash approach separately shows how much of the wash trade is incremental and how much is fuel customers who would have stopped anyway.

If you run more than a handful of sites, the value compounds: one consistent counting method across the estate means the weekly report compares like with like, and a site manager can no longer explain away a weak month with “it was quiet”. Book a demo and we will walk through a forecourt layout with you.

Gas station people counting FAQ

What is forecourt-to-shop conversion and how do I measure it?

Forecourt-to-shop conversion is the share of forecourt visits that end with someone walking through the shop door. You measure it with two counts: an outdoor sensor on the forecourt or canopy for arrivals, and an entrance sensor above the shop door for entries. BoostBI divides one by the other and reports it by hour, day and site. Because both numbers come from the same counting method everywhere, the figure is comparable across the estate rather than an estimate built from fuel volume.

Why do my shop entries not match my pump transactions?

Because they measure different events. A pump transaction is a fuelling; a shop entry is a person deciding to come inside. Pay-at-pump, HGV and fleet cards, multiple people in one vehicle and passers-by who never buy fuel all break the link. That gap is the point: comparing the two curves hour by hour is what tells you whether your shop is capturing the traffic your forecourt already generates, or quietly losing it to the card reader on the pump.

Can I count people on the forecourt itself, outdoors?

Yes. Nano Outdoor is built for open, weather-exposed areas: rain, direct sunlight, night-time glare from canopy lighting and the absence of a ceiling to mount on. It covers the forecourt, the entrance approach and the car wash lane. Indoors, Nano AI or Nano Prime handles the shop door and zones. Using outdoor and indoor counting together is what makes forecourt-to-shop conversion possible rather than a guess.

How do I measure the café, food-to-go and car wash separately?

Treat each as its own zone with its own counter. A sensor over the café and food-to-go area shows how many shop visitors actually reach it; a counter on the wash approach lane shows how much wash traffic is incremental rather than fuel customers who were stopping anyway. BoostBI reports each zone as a capture rate against shop entries, so you can see which secondary offer pulls people in and which one is simply occupying floor space.

Can counting data tell me when to clean the restrooms?

Yes, and it is a better trigger than a fixed rota. A counter on the restroom corridor tracks visits since the last clean, and BoostBI raises an alert when the count passes your threshold. Busy motorway sites then get attention when they need it instead of every two hours regardless, and you keep an auditable record for brand standards and franchise inspections. The same method is described on our restroom people counting page.

Do I need queue management at the till and coffee counter?

At a commuter peak, usually yes. Forecourt customers have a car outside and almost no patience, so a two-minute wait at the coffee machine or the single open till costs you the basket. Pairing entry counts with waiting time gives you a trigger for opening a second till before the queue forms, rather than after. Our queue management solution applies the same sensors already counting your door.

How do I compare petrol station footfall across a network of sites?

Normalise it. Raw counts favour motorway sites and punish rural ones, so BoostBI indexes each station against its own trailing average and against peers with a similar profile, then reports per opening hour and per staff hour. That turns a league table into something a regional manager can act on: which sites are underperforming their own traffic, not simply which sites are smaller.
