Most footfall counting software looks identical on a feature list and behaves very differently in a live store. This guide compares the six vendors buyers shortlist most often — V-Count, FootfallCam, RetailNext, Xovis, Milesight and Placer.ai — explains what actually separates them, and gives you the questions that expose the difference before you sign.
The short answer
There is no single best footfall counting software — there is a best fit per data requirement. If you need measured counts at a door with the analytics included, choose a sensor manufacturer that ships its own platform (V-Count, FootfallCam, Xovis). If you need a full video-based in-store platform and have the budget and IT capacity for it, look at RetailNext. If you need market-level estimates for sites you do not own, that is a different product category entirely (Placer.ai) and it will not replace door counting. If you are buying hardware into an existing analytics stack, a component manufacturer such as Milesight fits.

Three Product Categories Buyers Confuse
Half of all failed footfall projects start as a comparison between products that were never in the same category. Sort your shortlist before you compare features.
1. Measured counting (sensor + platform from one vendor)
A sensor over the door counts every entry and exit and writes it to a platform the same vendor operates. You get a count you can audit, at store, entrance and zone level, in real time. This is the category you need if footfall feeds conversion rate, staff scheduling, rent negotiation or tenant reporting. V-Count, FootfallCam and Xovis sit here.
2. Full in-store video analytics platforms
Counting is one module inside a broader platform that also handles video, integrations and merchandising analytics. Capability is higher and so is total cost, deployment time and IT involvement. RetailNext is the reference example.
3. Modelled location data (no hardware)
Estimates derived from mobile-device panels, extrapolated to a population. Excellent for comparing catchments and competitor sites you cannot instrument; not a substitute for a door count, because it is an estimate rather than a measurement. 7 Criteria That Decide the Shortlist
1. Manufacturer or reseller
Ask who builds the sensor. A vendor that manufactures its own hardware controls the firmware, the accuracy roadmap and the RMA process. A reseller escalates your fault to someone else and waits, exactly like you do.
2. Is the analytics platform included or licensed separately
Hardware quotes are easy to compare; platform licences are where the real multi-year cost sits. Get the five-year total — sensors, licences, support and any per-site fee — before comparing anything.
3. Stated accuracy, and the method behind it
An accuracy percentage without a stated test condition is marketing. Ask for the traffic density, entrance width, mounting height and lighting used in the test, then ask for the same figure at your own peak hour.
4. Staff exclusion and group counting
Staff walking through the door inflate footfall and depress conversion rate. If the system cannot exclude employees or count a family of four as four people, the conversion figure it produces is not usable for decisions.
5. Integration with what you already run
Confirm the API is documented and open, and test the actual path to your POS, workforce management or BI tool. Ask the support team, not the sales representative — the answers differ.
6. Privacy and compliance posture
Ask where processing happens. Sensors that count on the device and never transmit images remove most of the GDPR conversation before it starts. Ask for the DPA and the retention policy in writing.
7. Deployment and support reach
A vendor with installation partners in your countries will commission a rollout in weeks. One without them will ship boxes and leave the integration to you.

What is the best footfall counting software?

What is the difference between footfall counting software and people counting hardware?
The hardware is the sensor that detects and counts people at a doorway or in a zone. The software is the platform that stores those counts and turns them into conversion rate, dwell time, peak hours and site comparisons. Some vendors sell both together; others sell only one, which means a second contract and an integration project.
How accurate is footfall counting software?
Accuracy is a property of the sensor and its installation, not of the software. Modern 3D stereo vision sensors with on-device AI are the highest-accuracy category in normal retail conditions; beam counters and Wi-Fi-based estimation are materially lower. Always ask for the conditions behind a published accuracy figure, and validate it in your own busiest entrance before rollout.
Do I need footfall counting software if I already have CCTV?
CCTV records; it does not count. Running counting analytics on existing CCTV is possible but constrained by camera angle, lens and mounting position, which are chosen for surveillance rather than for counting. Dedicated overhead sensors are installed for the counting geometry, which is why their accuracy is higher.
How much does footfall counting software cost?
Cost is driven by the number of entrances, not by store size, and by whether the analytics platform is bundled or licensed separately.
