People Counting for Gyms and Fitness Clubs

Access control records who scanned in. It cannot tell you whether the free-weights area is full right now.

Gym members increasingly choose when to attend based on how busy the club is, and access-control data cannot answer that because it never records leaving. V-Count maintains live occupancy for the club and for individual zones, which can be published to members in-app, while giving operators the utilisation evidence to plan equipment and class programming.

What gym and fitness operators measure with V-Count

  • Live club occupancy for members — A real-time busyness figure that can be surfaced in your app or on screens to smooth peak demand.
  • Zone utilisation — Counts and dwell for free weights, cardio, functional and studio areas to guide equipment investment.
  • True visit duration — How long members actually stay, measured by entry and exit rather than assumed from check-in.
  • Class studio attendance — Studio door counts against bookings, exposing no-show rates by class and instructor.
  • Capacity and peak management — Threshold alerts when the club or a zone approaches comfortable capacity, informing staffing and access policy.
  • Non-member and guest traffic — Total footfall against member check-ins, capturing guests, tours and prospective joiners.

How V-Count measures gyms and fitness clubs

Every V-Count deployment pairs an on-sensor AI counter with the BoostBI cloud platform. The sensor does the counting and discards the image; BoostBI turns the counts into occupancy, dwell, capture rate and zone heatmaps you can act on.

  • Nano AI — the flagship 3D active stereo vision sensor, up to 99% accuracy regardless of lighting, shadow or crowding. Counts bidirectionally and excludes staff.
  • Nano Prime — wide-area indoor sensor for single-entrance sites, 98% accuracy in typical lighting.
  • Nano Outdoor — IP65 rated for open-air installation, rated from −30°C to +60°C.
  • BoostBI — dashboards, benchmarking across sites, scheduled reports, real-time threshold alerts, plus an open REST API and webhooks for POS, CRM, BI and BMS integration.

Privacy by design

V-Count sensors process 3D depth data on the device itself. No facial features are captured, no identifiable image is stored, and nothing personal is transmitted — only anonymous counts. V-Count is ISO 27001 certified and the architecture is GDPR compliant by design, which matters in a fitness environment including changing-area approaches, where cameras are entirely inappropriate.

Installation and rollout

Each sensor mounts overhead on a single PoE cable and self-calibrates. A typical unit is installed in about 20 minutes with no need to close the space. Certified partners handle installation across 130+ countries.

Why operators choose V-Count

  • Trusted by 600+ companies across 130+ countries
  • Over 25 billion people counted to date
  • ISO 27001 certified, privacy-first architecture
  • People counting, demographics and staff exclusion in a single sensor
  • Hardware built in-house — V-Count is the manufacturer, not a reseller

Frequently asked questions

How is this better than our turnstile or access system?

Access systems log entry events for members who scan. They miss guests, tailgating and exits, so they cannot produce live occupancy. V-Count counts every person bidirectionally at each threshold.

Can we show live busyness to members?

Yes. Live occupancy is available over the BoostBI REST API and webhooks, so it can be published in your member app or on club screens.

Is it appropriate near changing rooms?

Yes. Sensors capture no images and no facial features, only anonymous depth. This is why they are used at thresholds where cameras would be unacceptable.

Can we exclude personal trainers and staff?

Yes. Staff exclusion via wearable Bluetooth tags keeps trainers and cleaners out of member counts.

Will mirrors and glass partitions cause errors?

No. Depth sensing measures physical distance, so reflections in mirrors and glass are not counted as people.

Can we compare clubs across the estate?

Yes. BoostBI benchmarks occupancy, dwell and zone utilisation across every site and flags clubs diverging from the group.
