People Counting for Swimming Pools

Bathing load is a safety limit, and a poolside headcount by eye is not a record of it.

Pool operators work to a maximum bathing load, but counting swimmers visually is unreliable and leaves no evidence. Access data does not help because it cannot distinguish a swimmer from a gym-only visitor. V-Count counts at poolside and changing-village thresholds, holding a live bathing-load figure with an auditable history, in an environment where humidity and chlorine rule out most hardware.

What pool and leisure centre operators measure with V-Count

  • Live bathing load — Continuous occupancy on the poolside against your defined maximum, with alerts before the limit is reached.
  • Lane and session utilisation — Counts by session type so lane swimming, lessons and public swims are programmed on measured demand.
  • Changing village throughput — Movement through changing areas to size cubicle and locker provision at peak.
  • Swimmer versus dry-side visitor — Poolside counts separated from gym and studio traffic, which access systems cannot distinguish.
  • Lifeguard deployment — Occupancy by hour and pool area so lifeguard ratios follow real bather numbers.
  • Compliance evidence — Timestamped occupancy history retained in BoostBI to demonstrate that limits were observed.

How V-Count measures swimming pools

Every V-Count deployment pairs an on-sensor AI counter with the BoostBI cloud platform. The sensor does the counting and discards the image; BoostBI turns the counts into occupancy, dwell, capture rate and zone heatmaps you can act on.

  • Nano AI — the flagship 3D active stereo vision sensor, up to 99% accuracy regardless of lighting, shadow or crowding. Counts bidirectionally and excludes staff.
  • Nano Prime — wide-area indoor sensor for single-entrance sites, 98% accuracy in typical lighting.
  • Nano Outdoor — IP65 rated for open-air installation, rated from −30°C to +60°C.
  • BoostBI — dashboards, benchmarking across sites, scheduled reports, real-time threshold alerts, plus an open REST API and webhooks for POS, CRM, BI and BMS integration.

Privacy by design

V-Count sensors process 3D depth data on the device itself. No facial features are captured, no identifiable image is stored, and nothing personal is transmitted — only anonymous counts. V-Count is ISO 27001 certified and the architecture is GDPR compliant by design, which matters in a poolside and changing-village setting, where camera monitoring is prohibited outright in most jurisdictions.

Installation and rollout

Each sensor mounts overhead on a single PoE cable and self-calibrates. A typical unit is installed in about 20 minutes with no need to close the space. Certified partners handle installation across 130+ countries.

Why operators choose V-Count

  • Trusted by 600+ companies across 130+ countries
  • Over 25 billion people counted to date
  • ISO 27001 certified, privacy-first architecture
  • People counting, demographics and staff exclusion in a single sensor
  • Hardware built in-house — V-Count is the manufacturer, not a reseller

Frequently asked questions

Will sensors survive a humid, chlorinated pool hall?

Sensors are mounted overhead away from splash zones, and Nano Outdoor carries an IP65 rating for the most exposed positions. Specify the environment during survey and V-Count will confirm the right unit.

Can it count people in the water?

Sensors count people crossing poolside thresholds, which is how bathing load is maintained. Counting bodies within the water itself is not what the system is designed for.

Are swimmers ever visually recorded?

No. Only anonymous 3D depth data is processed on the device. No images or facial features exist at any point, which is essential in a changing environment.

Can we get an alert before bathing load is exceeded?

Yes. BoostBI sends real-time alerts by email, SMS or webhook at any threshold you set below the maximum.

Does steam or condensation affect accuracy?

Active stereo vision measures depth via infrared projection and tolerates humid conditions. Positioning is confirmed at survey to avoid direct steam plumes.

Can it separate lesson groups from public swimmers?

Session-level counts combined with your programme schedule show attendance per session type, including lessons and club hire.
