People Counting for Beaches

Lifeguard cover, cleansing and toilet provision all depend on a visitor number nobody actually measures.

Beach management decisions are made on weather forecasts and instinct because there is no gate to count through. Yet the cost consequences are real: lifeguard rotas, waste collection, parking and toilet provision all scale with visitors. V-Count places IP65 outdoor sensors at boardwalks, steps, promenade access points and car park exits to produce continuous beach visitation data.

What coastal and resort authorities measure with V-Count

  • Access point footfall — Continuous counts at every boardwalk, stairway and promenade entrance to the beach.
  • Lifeguard and safety cover — Visitor volume by hour and day so RNLI-style cover and safety staffing follow measured demand.
  • Cleansing and waste scheduling — Footfall-driven scheduling for litter collection, bin emptying and toilet servicing.
  • Seasonal and weather correlation — Visitation against temperature, tide and season to forecast peak days in advance.
  • Tourism and economic reporting — Auditable visitor figures for destination management, tourism boards and economic impact reporting.
  • Concession and parking demand — Traffic past kiosks, cafes and car park entrances to inform concession tenders and pricing.

How V-Count measures beaches

Every V-Count deployment pairs an on-sensor AI counter with the BoostBI cloud platform. The sensor does the counting and discards the image; BoostBI turns the counts into occupancy, dwell, capture rate and zone heatmaps you can act on.

  • Nano AI — the flagship 3D active stereo vision sensor, up to 99% accuracy regardless of lighting, shadow or crowding. Counts bidirectionally and excludes staff.
  • Nano Prime — wide-area indoor sensor for single-entrance sites, 98% accuracy in typical lighting.
  • Nano Outdoor — IP65 rated for open-air installation, rated from −30°C to +60°C.
  • BoostBI — dashboards, benchmarking across sites, scheduled reports, real-time threshold alerts, plus an open REST API and webhooks for POS, CRM, BI and BMS integration.

Privacy by design

V-Count sensors process 3D depth data on the device itself. No facial features are captured, no identifiable image is stored, and nothing personal is transmitted — only anonymous counts. V-Count is ISO 27001 certified and the architecture is GDPR compliant by design, which matters in a public beach, where any camera-based monitoring of bathers would be unacceptable.

Installation and rollout

Each sensor mounts overhead on a single PoE cable and self-calibrates. A typical unit is installed in about 20 minutes with no need to close the space. Certified partners handle installation across 130+ countries.

Why operators choose V-Count

  • Trusted by 600+ companies across 130+ countries
  • Over 25 billion people counted to date
  • ISO 27001 certified, privacy-first architecture
  • People counting, demographics and staff exclusion in a single sensor
  • Hardware built in-house — V-Count is the manufacturer, not a reseller

Frequently asked questions

Can hardware handle salt air and blown sand?

Nano Outdoor is IP65 rated and rated from −30°C to +60°C. Coastal exposure should be raised at survey so mounting position and housing suit the location.

How do you count on an open beach?

Sensors are mounted at the natural pinch points visitors must use: boardwalks, steps, ramps, promenade gaps and car park exits.

Will bright sun and reflected glare cause errors?

No. Active stereo vision projects its own infrared pattern and measures depth, so sand glare and direct sun do not affect counting.

Are beach users identifiable?

No. Only anonymous depth data is processed on the sensor. No images or facial features are captured, which matters where the public are in swimwear.

Can we count vehicles as well?

The system counts people. Pairing people counts at access points with your car park data gives the fuller picture.

Is data available in real time?

Yes. BoostBI shows live counts and sends threshold alerts by email, SMS or webhook, useful on peak summer days.
