People Counting for Cruise Ships

On a ship, every guest is aboard already — the question is where they are.

A cruise ship is a closed environment where the commercial and safety questions are both about distribution: which venues fill, which sit empty, and how many guests are in each space right now. V-Count counts guests at venue entrances, gangways and deck thresholds, giving onboard revenue and safety teams live distribution data without cameras in guest areas.

What cruise operations teams measure with V-Count

  • Venue occupancy by hour — Live and historic counts for restaurants, bars, theatres, casinos and lounges across the sailing.
  • Gangway movement at port calls — Bidirectional counts of guests ashore and aboard at each call, supporting reconciliation and departure readiness.
  • Muster and capacity compliance — Occupancy per assembly and public space against defined limits, with alerts and an auditable record.
  • Onboard retail and spa capture — Passing traffic versus entries for boutiques, spa and excursion desks to measure real conversion opportunity.
  • Deck and pool utilisation — Outdoor counts on pool decks and promenades to balance service coverage across the ship.
  • Itinerary and refit evidence — Venue demand compared across sailings and itineraries to justify programming and refit decisions.

How V-Count measures cruise ships

Every V-Count deployment pairs an on-sensor AI counter with the BoostBI cloud platform. The sensor does the counting and discards the image; BoostBI turns the counts into occupancy, dwell, capture rate and zone heatmaps you can act on.

  • Nano AI — the flagship 3D active stereo vision sensor, up to 99% accuracy regardless of lighting, shadow or crowding. Counts bidirectionally and excludes staff.
  • Nano Prime — wide-area indoor sensor for single-entrance sites, 98% accuracy in typical lighting.
  • Nano Outdoor — IP65 rated for open-air installation, rated from −30°C to +60°C.
  • BoostBI — dashboards, benchmarking across sites, scheduled reports, real-time threshold alerts, plus an open REST API and webhooks for POS, CRM, BI and BMS integration.

Privacy by design

V-Count sensors process 3D depth data on the device itself. No facial features are captured, no identifiable image is stored, and nothing personal is transmitted — only anonymous counts. V-Count is ISO 27001 certified and the architecture is GDPR compliant by design, which matters in guest areas aboard a vessel, where camera monitoring would be commercially unacceptable.

Installation and rollout

Each sensor mounts overhead on a single PoE cable and self-calibrates. A typical unit is installed in about 20 minutes with no need to close the space. Certified partners handle installation across 130+ countries.

Why operators choose V-Count

  • Trusted by 600+ companies across 130+ countries
  • Over 25 billion people counted to date
  • ISO 27001 certified, privacy-first architecture
  • People counting, demographics and staff exclusion in a single sensor
  • Hardware built in-house — V-Count is the manufacturer, not a reseller

Frequently asked questions

Will sensors work without a reliable internet connection at sea?

Yes. Counting and processing happen on the sensor. Data is buffered locally and synchronises to BoostBI when connectivity is available, so no counts are lost between ports.

Are guests identifiable in any way?

No. Only anonymous 3D depth data is processed on the device. No facial features are captured and nothing personal is stored or transmitted.

Can we count on open pool decks?

Yes. Nano Outdoor is IP65 rated and rated from −30°C to +60°C, suitable for exposed deck and promenade positions.

Can crew be excluded from guest counts?

Yes. Staff exclusion via wearable Bluetooth tags keeps crew movement out of guest figures.

Does vessel movement affect accuracy?

No. Sensors reference fixed overhead geometry within the space, so normal vessel motion does not degrade counting.

Can data feed our onboard revenue systems?

Yes. BoostBI offers a REST API, webhooks and exports for onboard POS, revenue-management and safety-management platforms.
